In the State of California it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle or a motorcycle without liability insurance coverage. The California DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) determines the length of time an SR22 filing has to be maintained. This is based on an individual case basis. In general the SR22 filing has to be maintained anywhere from 1-3 years, and you must maintain the policy in good standing during this time frame. Please keep in mind that the SR22 is a monitoring device, and your license will be suspended if your policy lapses for any reason. There are generally reinstatement fee and penalties attached if the policy lapses.
