Tennessee SR-22 Requirements and Information
The Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles subscribes, as most states do, to the SR-22 federal system of communication. This system is used to monitor the insurance status of individuals that have had previous problems in Tennessee. The Secretary of State's office in Nashville administers the requirements, and oversees the policies that are written in this manner.
The TN DMV allows for license reinstatement through a liability insurance policy, written to at least state minimums, endorsed with an SR-22 form to keep the state informed of the status of the policy. Tennessee will not release a suspended license, or release any holds on another state license until the SR22 requirement is met. Typically, the requirement period for an SR22 in Tennessee is 2 years continuous.
The state of Tennessee recognizes liability insurance applied to any type of motor vehicle that can be legally driven on the road, or applied directly to an individual (non-owner). As long as the insurance is maintained without interruption, the license remains valid under either hardship or occupational status. Once the mandated time period of coverage is met, you can drop the SR22 policy without issue.
Obtaining an SR-22 for Tennessee is easy, and can be done over the phone with an agent from WESSELL INSURANCE SERVICES. The policy is purchased with a credit/debit card, and signatures are obtained through email/fax. WESSELL INSURANCE SERVICES has a direct line with Nashville, and can have the filing to the DMV within 30 minutes. The policy that is emailed/faxed to you will also have an SR22 copy that can be presented immediately for license release. If you live out of state, and need the filing in Tennessee, we can generally issue a broad-form non-owner SR22 for around $350/year paid in full. Each renewal would run around $155/year paid in full. This type of non-owner coverage can never include a vehicle, and is designed for individuals who already have insurance or do not want a vehicle and just the license. Remember, a non-owner policy does not mean that you don't own a car, just that there is no car on the policy. Discretion is the goal when it comes to NON-OWNER SR22 policies.
The overwhelming majority of SR-22 policies written by WESSELL INSURANCE SERVICES in Tennessee are non-owner policies. They are always the least expensive and least complicated option. If there is a vehicle that needs coverage, you certainly need to include that on the policy, either liability only or full-coverage. A non-owner Tennessee SR22 policy can always be expanded to include a vehicle later, many times at a minimum increase in premium. WESSELL INSURANCE SERVICES will remain the agency with your account, and the agents here will be the first point of contact for all issues after the sale. If we need to follow up with the DMV over and again, that is what we will do. The Tennessee DMV is actually one of the easier offices to work with, but our experience will always be available.
