Tennessee SR-22 Auto Financial Responsibility Information
The Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles subscribes, as most states do, to the SR22 financial responsibility federal system of communication. This system is used to monitor the insurance status of individuals that have had previous problems in Tennessee. The Secretary of State’s office in Nashville administers the requirements, and oversees the policies that are written in this manner.
The Tennessee DMV allows for license reinstatement through a liability insurance policy, written to at least state minimums, endorsed with an SR-22 form to keep the state informed of the status of the policy. Tennessee will not release a suspended license, or release any holds on another state license until the SR22 requirement is met. Typically, the requirement period for an SR22 in Tennessee is 2-3 years continuous.
The state of Tennessee recognizes liability insurance applied to any type of motor vehicle that can be legally driven on the road, or applied directly to an individual (named-operator). As long as the insurance is maintained without interruption, the license remains valid under either hardship or occupational status. Once the mandated time period of coverage is met, you can remove the SR22 endorsement from the policy without consequence to your driver’s license, or you may cancel the policy all together if you are not in need of the insurance. Please keep in mind that this would be a great time to have us shop your insurance with all our carriers to see if you now qualify for lower rates!
A non-owner policy can be purchased if there are no automobile registered in your name, and that applies to all states. However, a non owner policy can be purchased if there is a vehicle/s in the household, but not registered to your name. The exception to this rule is a husband and wife who own a vehicle. In that scenario, the vehicle has to be listed.
In some states a broad form can be purchased, in addition to your existing policy. Tennessee is one of those states, that a broad form SR22 policy can be written, and generally is the least expensive. Please contact us for specific information regarding a broad form policy to see if that suits your situation.
Minimum mandatory insurance coverage for the State of Tennessee is:
- $25,000 bodily injury for one person in one accident
- $50,000 for two or more persons in one accident
- $15,000 property damage incurred in one accident
